Trust the Process?!…

Trust the process.  What is this “process” and why trust it at all?

Do you remember the days of the card catalogue in the library?  If you had a question, you would search through these large rectangular boxes filled with meticulously-arranged little white cards.  It was the beginning of a literary treasure hunt.  This was truly a process!  We now live in the days where we type anything, and I mean anything, into Google and, within microseconds, a multitude of responses are visible on the screen right before us. If typing is too time-consuming, just ask Siri.  In the modern age of technology and consumerism,  we have become conditioned to want, expect and demand all answers immediately.

Wanting everything here and now may be a modern-day phenomenon, yet there is an age-old process encompassing us all.  It is called “the process of life on Planet Earth”.  If you stopped for a few minutes, took some deep breaths and reviewed your life from childhood to present, you would probably find a diverse mix of experiences and feelings.  In the Classroom of Life, we are always living and learning, whether we are consciously aware of it or not.

So, yes, in Life, we have the celebrations.  We also have the more neutral in-between times.  Yet what about the suffering?  Certainly, calling life a “process” brings in many philosophical, religious and spiritual topics that have been the heated source of debates for centuries.  How much of this process is free will?  How much is destiny?  Where is the balance (or is there?) between humankind shaping destiny and Divine intervention into human affairs?  Does trauma happen because it “just happens” or is there some bigger Divine purpose to it all?

Today, I wish to use Nature as the response.  To start with, let’s take a look at the seasons.  Change is imminent.  There is a spring to plant seeds and an autumn to harvest.  Winter may chill our bones yet summer will warm our hearts.  We cannot force the seasons. There is a time for everything.  However, each season presents us with the opportunity to take inspired actions based on our individual journeys.  For example, when it is time to quietly plant seeds, dream big, as big as you can.  Place it in your heart and never, ever let go. No matter what, cultivate these precious visions with perseverance, prayer, consistency, love and kindness.  When it is harvest time, give of your abundance and party on!!! It is up to each individual to respect the ebb and flow of the seasons and seize your soul-based opportunities as they arise;  this is where we make a difference for ourselves, our family, our friends, our community, our world.

This week’s feature picture comes from a talented photographer and nature lover.  While travelling through the Azores, he followed his soul towards the sea.  He did not know where he was going and ended up climbing over very rugged terrain. Yet what he found were majestic rock formations and beautiful lava pools.  Rocks along the pathway of life can invoke fear or provide inspiration.  Same rocks, same unknown pathway–The choice in response is yours.

I believe that each individual’s process of life is authentic, just like the fingerprint.  There is no “one size fits all” formula for all humanity.  Yet by trusting your soul to walk your uncharted territory, perhaps we can transform the process of life, not only for ourselves but for all humankind.

Redefinition #20:

Just for the moment, may I be gentle on myself as I trust the process of my own life.  As the Serenity Prayer says, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.” And so it is. Amen.
