Beauty in the Arts

Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of every day life.”

How can you temporarily transcend the challenges of life?  Surrender to the power of the Arts whether it be painting, music, literature, dance, etc.  Having difficulty cultivating your inner Picasso?  Perhaps you can purchase an adult colouring book and intentionally colour outside the lines, creating your own piece of art that defies the expected structure.  If music is your language of choice, perhaps you can listen to a selection of melodies that immerses you in a pleasurable mindset.  Or perhaps you can read a spectacular book that speaks to your soul, touches your heart, educates your mind, tickles your funny bone,  or transports you to another universe that is free of your present day story, whatever it may be.  The possibilities are endless.

This past week, I was reminded of the healing power of the poetic word by a dear Reverend who was preparing to officiate her first wedding.  She presented me with the beautiful words of Lebanese-American poet, Kahil Gibran:

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.  Love one another but make not a bond of love:  Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.  Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.  Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.  Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.  Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.  For the hand of Life can contain your hearts.  And stand together, yet not too near together:  For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow”

Profound, beautiful words.  I was instantly transported to this magical world where simultaneous love and independence gently reigned.  All of the challenges, the trauma, the pain, just melted away, if but for a moment in time.

Redefinition #17:

Just for the moment, may we all find beauty in a word, image or melody, for these are the simple pleasures of life awaiting to embrace us and carry us away.
